Should I participate in the Amazon Advantage Program?

If you've published with Outskirts Press, the short answer is no. If your book is published with our Diamond, Pearl, Ruby, or Sapphire package, your book is already listed on Amazon (or will be soon after it becomes published), so there is no reason to sign up for the Amazon Advantage Program. Being a member of Amazon Advantage defeats half the point of publishing with Outskirts Press. We distribute and handle the fulfillment of Amazon orders for you, so you do not have to deal with any of that. The Amazon Advantage Program ends up taking more of your profits and requires a yearly fee.

You're right, Amazon sometimes reports "1-3 weeks" by default for POD books because they like to under promise and over deliver. In most cases, this is because they have not received enough orders to create "stock" for the book yet, or to accurately estimate proper ordering levels. In most cases, they order the book immediately from Ingram anyway, and the book is fulfilled within 24 hours just like  books in the  Advantage program, by being delivered directly (drop-shipped) straight to the customer within a time that is much faster than what they report on-screen. In other cases, Amazon chooses to queue up orders until such a time that they can place a larger order with Ingram (since they get a price break when they do that). And that 1-3 week status gives them the flexibility to do that if they decide to. That's a business choice Amazon is making that is out of our control. Titles within Amazon Advantage show a status of "In stock" because they are always in stock, much like many POD books that Amazon has ordered in larger quantities. The best way to keep a status of In Stock for your book on Amazon is to produce enough sales to motivate Amazon to keep a supply on-hand. That way you get all the advantages without any of the disadvantages of Advantage.

Three friends of mine ordered Stop Sabotaging Your Life, 3 Steps To Your Full Potential August 1st - its now August 7th and it has not shipped as of yet. This kind of shipping and availability does nothing for authors except work against them and provokes consumer to purchase the book elsewhere or even choose a different book. Nobody wants to wait 2 to 3 weeks to receive a book when most products ship within 24hours. In addition, Outskirt Press charges an annual digital fee of $25 - similar to Amazon, only that with the annual fee charged by Outskirt Press there are no benefits which come with it.

New authors are at disadvantage with the current system. Sure, we could try to sell more books so Amazon can stock them but if nobody is buying them because of the 1 to 3 weeks shipping how do you suggest we sell more books? We're better off promoting and pushing the Kindle version instead of the hardcopy.

My concern is that without the Amazon Advantage program, orders take 1 to 3 weeks to be fulfilled. And it states it below the title on your amazon page. However, with the Amazon Advantage program orders are fulfilled within 24hours. That's a huge advantage.

You're right, your friends should contact Amazon and tell them to speed things up.  Should Amazon respond to orders faster? Absolutely. So please tell them so. Or... hit them where it hurts and order the books from Barnes & Noble.com, which always has 24 hour turnaround.  You make the same amount regardless of where people buy your book, so have them buy it from Barnes & Noble (or our direct bookstore, which is printed and shipped within 2 business days) at http://outskirtspress.com/bookstore
